Bypass valve is designed to divert steam from one part of the system (such as power generation or process steam such as paper and pulp production) to a reheat or exhaust piping to safeguard equipment from over pressure. Designed to cope with pressure and temperature differentials, they are used in many applications.


Bypass Valve is a type of valve that is installed in a bypass pipeline. These valves generally do not indicate any particular category of valves, any particular shape or the size of the valve. Therefore, valves which are installed on the bypass piping line, such as pressure reducing valves, steam traps and control valves are also known to be bypass valves.

When installing a bypass valve, understanding the purpose of laying down a bypass piping line is important. Thus an installation engineer should first understand the purpose of bypass line before installing a bypass valve onto it. In the oil and gas industry applications, a bypass piping line is laid because of two reasons:

  • To act as a backup line so as to allow continuous operations of the industry in case any failure or damage occurs to the main pipeline equipment.
  • To supplement the performance of the mainline valves.
