Upset Tubing is a long tubing joint which is installed in a wellbore to facilitate the extraction of oil and gas. It acts as a conduit, through which the produced fluids or gas get transmitted from the bottom to the surface. Tubing joint is relatively a single length pipe that can vary in length anywhere from 25 to 30 ft. This ideal length allows easy production as the tubing joint is fitted with threads on both sides and can run down through a well of any depth. Like most tubing equipment, tubing joints are designed to suit a certain well type, based on the underground conditions and fluids.
Explains Upset Tubing
American Petroleum Institute (API) developed specifications for three different connectors for use as tubing joints:
- External-upset tubing and coupling (Upset tubing)
- Non-upset tubing and couplings
- Integral-joint tubing
Tubing Joints are cylindrical and act as production conduits in well completion operations. Their length can go up to 9 meters or 30 ft. They are installed for well completion as it is through these pipes that oil and natural gas is produced. There are many regulations set up by the API for tubing equipment manufacturing. It is essential for tubing joints to be of single length and up to 30 ft. The selection of tubing joints for a particular well depends on the underground conditions of the wellbore, which can get influenced by the reservoir fluids found beneath the earth’s surface.
